"A cozy romp that touches lightly on multiple genres to spin an intriguing tale: murder mystery, IRA art heist, coming-to-America immigrant story, justice for elder financial abuse, dual rom-com narratives, and an earnest story of two sisters learning to appreciate each other again. A delightful tale with vivid characters." —Kirkus

Delightful!

"This is a delightful read that has mystery, romance and a bit of history. Set mostly in rural Ireland it included great characters, some humour and a lot of charm. The dynamic between the sisters felt true to life and their flaws were realistic. It was a perfect choice to read between a few heavier non-fiction books as I really enjoyed it. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital advance reading copy. 4/5 stars!"

Delightful read

"There is a very good reason that Mary Kay Andrews is dubbed the Queen of Summer Read and Road Trip does not disappoint. It is a fun read that combines family drama, secrets and a road trip that is perfection in its charm and chaos. Don't worry there is a splash of romance. What more can we ask for. The story is atmospheric, fun and Ireland is a charactre unto itself. Mary Kay Andrews makes the reader feel like they are in the pub, in the car and just part of this quirky family. I thoroughly enjoyed Road Trip and I will be going back to read the few Mary Kay Andrews books I missed though I dont how I did. Settle in for a great summer read and just enjoy the trip."

A Promising Premise That Didn’t Fully Deliver!

"I picked up Road Trip by Mary Kay Andrews because the combination of family secrets, family drama, and a road trip sounded especially appealing. There were certainly interesting ideas throughout, and I could see what the story was aiming for, but it didn’t connect with me as strongly as I had hoped. I had a hard time warming up to some of the characters, especially Therese, and the number of secondary characters occasionally made the story feel a bit crowded. At 439 pages, the novel also felt somewhat longer than necessary, with certain details revisited more often than I would have preferred. The romance moved a little quickly for my taste, and I wasn’t fully convinced by the chemistry between the couple. I also found some of the language not to my personal preference. For me, this story lacked the charm and spark I usually associate with Mary Kay Andrews. The premise was strong, but the execution didn’t fully live up to its potential."

A journey family secrets and healing

"Book rating: 4/5 ⭐️ Genre: contemporary family mystery/romance Themes: road trip, family mystery, Ireland, sibling dynamics, second chances 📖 Read if you like: The A to Z of Everything When their mother’s death brings estranged sisters back together again, the two will be forced to take a journey of discovery. Responsible and straight laced Maeve is a professor who had taken leave for caregiving during her mother’s final months. When her wayward sister returns late for the funeral only looking for her inheritance, tempers will flare. Therese is a struggling actress who has always been beautiful, flighty and charismatic. When it becomes clear that there is no monetary inheritance given that their mother had taken out a mortgage and donated all her savings towards an evangelical scheme as dementia set in, the Dunigan sisters will be left with a painting and a story that will lead them back to their ancestral lands. In order to authenticate this possibly priceless painting and determine its point of origin, the girls will need to rediscover their family roots and perhaps along the way get a fresh start for their relationship and flailing lives. It is a journey of understanding, healing and revisiting the past, both recent and generational. If you have a sister like Therese, I feel for your patience, but she was the perfect balance to Maeve. Only with their duality could they solve this age old family mystery and address old wounds and differences. This book really thrived on the characters and descriptive landscapes. The ensemble ranged from quirky to curmudgeon lending this tale of family legacy, mystery and romance a chaotic and charming lens. There was a breadth to them that kept me invested and made them feel real. From Savannah to Ireland, this journey was heartwarming and often heart breaking trip. The Irish charm was in full effect with old manors, distilleries and handsome men with boisterous families included. The landscape swayed from village pubs to decorated halls, family lunches to grouchy pool sharks making this an atmospheric adventure. The mystery behind the painting and Kathleen’s journey was captivating and full of hardship. In the contemporary timeline, there is a series of unfortunate events that will lead both sisters to make an uncharacteristic choice and get a second chance at life along the way. The romance was cute and tied up with a neat little bow for both Maeve and Therese and the sibling bonding was messy and genuine. It was just the type of summer reading I enjoy with a little love, a family legacy mystery and lots of personal growth. Thank you to Macmillan Audio, St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for an ALC and eARC. 🎧 Kathleen McInerney did an excellent job with the narration. The Irish and southern American accents landed this tale in the landscape and she gave each character their own personalities and emotional bandwidths. She seamlessly moved between males and female voices and excelled at created tension and tenderness with her tone and pacing. Will be listening to more from this narrator!"
