“Vibrant and visceral, this world of Perry's is absolutely fantastic! Tickles all the romantasy sweet spots for me!” —RuNyx, New York Times bestselling author of Gothikana, for Shield of Sparrows

"A riveting world, a twisty plot, and a smoldering romance. I burned through this epic romantasy."—USA Today and international bestselling author K.A. Tucker, for Shield of Sparrows

Shield of Sparrows is the best fantasy romance I’ve read in years and my top read of 2025. This story is unlike anything I’ve read before with lush, unique world building, thrilling adventures and an epic love story.”—USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Giana Darling, for Shield of Sparrows

“This book is everything! The world building and main characters were so refreshing and empowering, and that simmering slow burn was so worth the wait. Devney absolutely slayed it with this romantasy, and I can’t wait to read book two!”—New York Times bestselling author Shanora Williams, for Shield of Sparrows

“Devney Perry writes romantasy like she’s been doing it her whole career, filling the pages with vivid world building, unique storylines, and delicious tension. This book is all-consuming and nothing short of binge worthy!”—USA Today bestselling author CE Ricci, for Shield of Sparrows

"Shield of Sparrows is a delight of immersive worldbuilding, characters who spoke to my heart, and an intense slow-burn romance that held me captive. I'm incredibly excited to read the next book in the series!"—Nalini Singh, New York Times bestselling author of the Psy-Changeling and Guild Hunter series, for Shield of Sparrows

Not as good as book 1

"3. 5 stars, but I’m rounding up. I have mixed feelings. Overall, it was slow paced and didn’t hold me for longer than a few chapters at a time. Shield of Sparrows took me 5 days to read, whereas Starling took almost 3 weeks. I can see creatively why Devney wrote this the way that she did, but this one honestly could’ve been a novella, I think."

What a Read!

"4. 5 stars Wow. Wow. Wow. Listen. This book had me NERVOUS and I feel the need to warn others. I was enraptured by ""Shield of Sparrows"" and captured in a chokehold from the very beginning. Now for this one, I didn't have quite that same response. It was more of a slow burn shall we say in the sense that it wasn't until page 200 (if you know, you know) where I felt myself LOCK IN. This book was different compared to ""Shield of Sparrows"" but in some ways also the same. It just felt like a very different story because of the development and how things progressed. As well, an additional POV was unexpected and although I was able to make one correct prediction, there was a lot that happened along the way that I didn't see coming. This book really leaned more heavily into Fantasy than Romantasy. Please tell me I'm not alone in thinking this! There really is some complexities between the creatures, the world(s), the magic systems, etc. Even after finishing this book, I do not think I have the fantastical elements fully understood. I think I'm going to have to read some summaries in regards to that and/or have some discussions with others. Man. The emotion. This book is going to get you in the feels. Multiple times. I can't even explain that hollow and dull feeling in my stomach that came along with periods of anticipatory dread. I cannot wait to read what's to come in this series. I am still speechless."

Amazing read

"Whaaaat did I just read omg 🥲😭🤔😩 holy spectrum of emotions after this one!! I loved finding out more information about Odessa and this world. The world building is amazing 🤩 I’m mind blown by all the twists and turns. It kept speculating how Odessa was related to Caspia but never in a million freaking years did I guess that! I wondered if we knew who Andreas was and if he was some royal going by a different name but I didn’t see that one coming!!! This book was delicious and I can’t wait for book 3 cause I’m not loving that cliffhanger at all 😤"

Disappointment

"Shield of Sparrows was incredible, Rites of the Starling was my most anticipated read this year. Big disappointment. Where was the love story of Ransom and Odessa? More than half the way through they finally get some pages but even then, not much and not like the first book at all. Most of the book is so boring. New characters that we have no idea even how the fit in. And all Odessa does is travel on a horse. Regretting buying this book. Should have just waited for it to be available for free through the library, and should have DNF it, instead of wasting money on physical copy."

Incredible! Slow to start, then amazing!

"Incredible. I did not expect the ending! And while it was slow to start, just like Shield of Sparrows, the story grew to be more beautiful and tense as it kept going. One of my favourite reads."

Loved it!

"Great world building and I love this story so much, cannot wait for the next one!"

Disappointed

"I loved the first book but the second book was 400 pages of nothing and a weak plot twist. I dont get the hype around this book."

Radagast10 (1/5)

Good book

"For almost 80% of the book nothing happens and I feel like whatever chapters are left is not enough for everything to happen. 😱 But those last few pages were not what I thought would happen (in a good way). The plot twist was amazing, loved the ending. Love the cover and sprayed edge of the book."
